My gut issues started from childhood. I suffered from chronic constipation & gas.
I would poop maybe once in 5-7 days and thought that was normal. I do have a genetic component so I grew up believing that was my only problem.
And the gas. I was so embarrassed by foul smelling gas because constipated food sat in my colon too long contributing to issues like smelly gas and headaches. The gas was so severe that anyone sitting beside me had to run far away, LOL. I now laugh and talk about it but back then it was very embracing.
What was causing me to have these issues and why was no one able to connect the dots for me?
With my training in Functional Nutrition, I started to connect my own dots. I learned that my diet and lifestyle habits played a big role. I was eating a lot of junk and sugary foods like samosas, chips, fried foods & Gulab jamuns. Yummy. But I was not aware these were some of the foods contributing to my gut issues.
Along with poor food choices, lifestyle choices also contributed to my symptoms. The big S –“STRESS”. Stress is always a big part of my life. Back then I did not know there were two kinds of stress, internal and external. My internal stressors were my food choices and externally I was living a life of stress be it at school or home.
My nutritional training taught me that: All disease begins in the gut. Gut health is often the root of symptoms and is of great importance when trying to heal from disease. Gut health also plays a big role in strengthening your immune system and brain function. When your gut is out of balance, other functions in the body are also impacted.
I started to see tremendous changes in my health when I started fixing my gut. I started eating a whole foods diet, drank more water, started an exercise routine and Voilà!!!! my body started responding positively. This helped me realize that everything in the body is connected and everything you do on a daily basis matters, even if it’s just a baby step in the right direction.
